Texas coach Chris Beard said his sixth-seeded Longhorns will need to play their best game...
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - MARCH 10: Micah Peavy #0 of the TCU Horned Frogs guards Timmy Allen #0 of the Texas Longhorns in the second half during the first round game of the 2022 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament at T-Mobile Center on March 10, 2022 in Kansas City, Missouri. The drought’s an unsightly thing, embarrassing.
But Beard, who spent the past six seasons at Little Rock and Texas Tech , is quick to remind he wasn’t present for any of that. The players, even the four who returned from last year’s group after flaming out in the first round against 14th-seeded Abilene Christian, are wise enough to know this is a different team on a different journey.
Anyway, there’s enough to worry about this weekend without lugging around the back-breaking weight of history. No. 6 seed Texas won’t carry any ghosts into Friday’s East Region first-round game against 11th-seeded Virginia Tech at Fiserv Forum. Rather, it’ll try to lean on a wealth of experience, good and bad, in its matchup with an all-cylinders Hokies team that’s won 13 of 15 and just pounded No. 7 Duke to claim their first ACC tournament crown.
“The tournament has an energy, and it’s palpable,” Texas junior Brock Cunningham, one of the team’s returnees, said Monday. “You can’t describe it to anyone else. You have to be there to experience it. And then crazy stuff happens in March. And I think having the experience of being in the tournament helps with that, and knowing that every play is so important.”
