The huge concert-cum-party outside Buckingham Palace was a celebration of a venerable monarch, but was geared explicitly at the young and idealistic.
| The Queen used a huge Platinum Jubilee concert in central London on Saturday night to present an image of Britain as modern, youthful, innovative and multicultural, positioning the royal family as forward-looking rather than backwards-facing.
The Queen’s only appearance was in a video that she shared with Paddington Bear, a humorous skit echoing her memorable cameo with James Bond at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. As 22,000 ticketed punters tried to get into the enclosure out the front of Buckingham Palace, at various times the queue stretched for over a mile. But tempers remained restrained.No food and drink could be taken in, so those inside queued for up to 90 minutes to buy a glass of Pimm’s or a serving of fish and chips.
At that point, the entire of Buckingham Palace became what Prince William described as “a giant Imax theatre”, lit up with images of jungles and savannah.
