Chris Kelsall says investors are upping their allocation to fusion energy amid concern they’ll miss “the next Google” in the race among green technologies.
The Australian chief executive of UK fusion energy developer Tokamak Energy says investors around the world are stepping up their allocation to the space amid concern they’ll miss “the next Google” in the race among emerging green technologies.
“A number of governments and investors are now approaching us and really wanting to have the discussion to better understand what the pathways for fusion are and what role it can play,” he says. Mr Kelsall describes fusion as the “most naturally occurring form of energy creation in the universe”, powering the light, stars, and moon “we all see out the window”.Tokamak, a private company based near Oxford, is hoping to commission a “world-first” fusion pilot plant in the early 2030s.
He describes it as a “race against time from a climate perspective” but also “against other competing technologies”, which is a “good thing”. “High and ultra-high net worth entrepreneurs in Australia are putting their money to work,” he says, hinting at Mike Cannon-Brookes and Andrew Forrest’s various green investments. “But I think we can take that far further.”The challenge for retail investors is getting exposure, with Tokamak, for example, one of only five private fusion developers to have raised more than $US150 million .
