Trey Lance must get reps to turn his career fortunes around. And that's just not likely to happen with the win-now 49ers.
But it’s less about age and more about experience. Even the four players who did win a chip before they could rent cars without extra fees, they had way more experience when they pulled it off than Lance.
The most reasonable blueprint for Lance, which feels so much more fantastical now, was Wilson’s path. Like Lance, Wilson had a stellar defense in Seattle and some formidable offensive weapons to compensate for his lack of experience. But Lance, to put it bluntly, isn’t nearly as good as young Russ was when he came into the league.
But this is his career we’re talking about. He shouldn’t leave that riding on the same odds as hitting on a Vegas airport slot. His career, his talent, deserves a real shot. He needs to be on a team that by, say, Week 11 can afford to play him just to see what he’s got.earned the reins to the 49ers with a five-game stretch to close the 2017 season. He missed his entire second season due to injury — and the Warriors won the championship while he was out. The championship window was still open for his third season, but he’d barely played any basketball since high school. He was raw and in desperate need of minutes. But the Warriors were built to contend. It was a bad mix.
