Comment: Why you should embrace the discomfort of being awful at something this lockdown | SusanCarland
One of the pleasantly surprising things about being in one’s 40s is the level of mastery exercised over numerous areas of life. I don’t mean Jedi-level mastery, just a decent level of capability. By now, we are probably somewhat established in careers we have been doing for a while. We know how to do the tasks of our jobs with a decent level of confidence, tasks that would have made us break out in a cold sweat in earlier years.
The discomfort of being really awful at something and trying to conquer it is strangely invigorating, probably because it’s shakes one out of their mental and physical fugue.A friend who is a surgeon told me that surgeries that took him many hours at the beginning of his career, he could now probably do with his eyes closed. Chef or dentist, after enough years, tricky work becomes straightforward.
And while it feels good to be vaguely proficient at most of what I do, I realised recently that there is a problem with it. I was comfortable, and starting to forget how it felt to be an absolutely rubbish beginner at things. I wasn’t being challenged at all.
