Queensland experiences severe weather with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and power outages. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts more wild weather, including the potential for storms and flash flooding.

Parts of Queensland have been lashed with up to 100 millimeters of rain, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting more wild weather could be on the way. Forecaster Steve Hadley said a wide range of rainfall was recorded across the state since 9am on Sunday, with the Gold Coast experiencing its wettest January day since 2020. 'The most we've seen so far is Gold Coast Seaway — 100mm there and it's heaviest daily fall in 18 months,' he said.

Other parts of the coast, including Coolangatta and Palm Beach, saw falls of around 70mm, while the Sunshine Coast recorded 57mm. The SES responded to 76 call-outs overnight, mostly on the Gold Coast and in Rockhampton and Charters Towers due to roof damage and fallen trees. Mr Hadley said that storms across central and northern Queensland brought a 'little bit of rain' but the main focus over the weekend was wind. 'We saw some really gusty winds through northern Queensland and central Queensland yesterday, the top gusts being at the Hughenden Airport — 119 kilometers per hour just before 4pm yesterday,' he said. On Monday morning, power outages were reported in parts of Rockhampton, the Central Highlands and Mackay, extending as far north as Ayr. Julie Arhern, the owner of the Hillview Motel in Charter Towers, said the storm that moved through over the weekend escalated rapidly. 'It was a very quick storm, we watched it brew then we thought we'd put some cars away, and then it sort of flipped back on itself,' she said. Fraser Coast mayor George Seymour said the weekend rain had damaged roads, including the Bruce Highway, and caused flash flooding. 'We are having to close some roads … any further rain will cause flash flooding,' he said. Australia is now in the peak of the severe weather season and this weekend will offer up an assortment of atmospheric extremes. Birdsville reached a top of 45.9 degrees on Saturday afternoon, with severe to locally-extreme heatwave conditions expected to continue across western and northern Queensland. Mr Hadley said temperatures were expected to be three to four degrees above the average across the North Tropical Coast and parts of the Herbert and Lower Burdekin. 'Temperatures out there potentially up to six, eight degrees above average for the next couple of days before starting to decline later this week,' Mr Hadley said. There will be 'generally less rain around' but there's still the chance of isolated heavy rainfalls across Queensland, Mr Hadley added. A broad range of locations could see storms, including Cairns in the state's far north and inland at places like Charlesville and Mount Isa.'A bit less scope than the last few days for flash flooding.'There's more potential for damaging wind gusts with the storms today and potentially some larger hail sizes as well,' he said.
