Evacuations and road closures due to heavy rainfall, landslides, and cyclone risk. Residents urged to prepare for potential flooding and severe weather.

Wild weather continues to wreak havoc in parts of Far North Queensland , prompting evacuations and road closures due to heavy rainfall, dangerous landslides, and an increased risk of cyclones. Heavy flooding has led to the closure of up to 20 roads across the Cairns region, including sections of the Bruce Highway and the Kuranda Range road, blocked by a dangerous landslide.

The State Emergency Service and Swiftwater rescue crews evacuated residents of Gordonvale, near Cairns, on Wednesday after torrential rain caused flooding in low-lying areas. Meanwhile, residents in the Capricornia district are being urged to check and update their phone settings to favorite the Emergency Alert phone number to stay informed as conditions worsen. The Bureau of Meteorology issued extreme rainfall warnings on Wednesday for parts of the north tropical coast, primarily affecting Cairns, Innisfail, Cardwell, Tully, Yarrabah, and Gordonvale. The persistent wild weather across northern Australia has created an 'ideal environment' for potential cyclones to develop, with heavy rainfalls in Cairns exceeding 300mm. Sky News Australia Meteorologist Alison Osborne warned that there is a 30 percent chance of up to five tropical lows developing into cyclones over the weekend, with one already observed in the Coral Sea off Cairns. As the monsoon season brings a surge of westerly winds over northern Australia, several tropical lows are on track to form in the waters, potentially intensifying into cyclones later this week. The active monsoon trough continuing to travel along the coastline of northern Queensland suggests further flooding is expected throughout the night. The BOM also added: 'A surface low lies just off the coast southeast of Cairns, and is working with a ridge of high pressure further south to push rain areas onshore.' The tropical low off the coast of Cairns currently has a 25 percent chance of developing into a cyclone. Osborne urged residents to take the warning seriously and plan and prepare ahead of potential disasters. 'If you live in northern Australia or areas surrounding the far north tropical coast, flooding is already occurring due to recent rain and there is a potential for cyclonic activity so plan and prepare,' she said. Osborne emphasized the need for residents to avoid complacency and prioritize safety, regardless of whether they live in durable buildings capable of withstanding cyclonic activity. The Bureau of Meteorology issued extreme rainfall warnings on Wednesday for parts of the north tropical coast, primarily affecting Cairns, Innisfail, Cardwell, Tully, Yarrabah, and Gordonvale. Picture: BOM Queensland Police also issued a safety alert on Wednesday urging residents to 'favorite' the Emergency Alert (EA) phone number to stay informed during emergencies or disasters. Emergency Alert is the national telephone-based warning system used to send voice messages to landlines and text messages to mobile phones to warn people of emergencies, including dangerous weather with severe impacts. Although the alert is not issued for every circumstance, messages will include potentially life-saving directions in case of disasters. The Emergency Alert from the system is sent from caller ID number: +61 444 444 444. Messages from +61 444 444 444 are not a scam; they are official phone warnings as part of a national geo-targeting emergency alert system. Residents are being asked to check that the number is not blocked on their device and to add it to their 'favorites' so they don't miss the alerts
