The WA government has no consolidated record of native vegetation cleared in the state, and that has environmentalists worried.

The Wildflower Society of WA is concerned the state government is not monitoring native vegetation closely enough.

He suspected there might be more clearing that fell outside the government's current monitoring system than what fell within it, including unauthorised clearing and clearing covered by exemption permits. In the last state budget, $3.3 million was set aside to trial a pilot called WA Vegetation Extent to explore different vegetation monitoring and mapping techniques.

He said it would use satellite imagery to compile a database on all the land clearing that had occurred since 2004 when the last comprehensive set of statistics was put together. The state government is aware of the environment's vulnerability, particularly in the South West where decades of intensive clearing means less than 30 per cent of native vegetation remains.

A state government spokesperson said native vegetation management sat across several agencies, and it was working to "address the challenges this presents to coordinating environmental protection". But Mr Loney said, for the amount of clearing that was occurring, he would have expected to see a more dramatic drop in the road toll.)
