A WNBL coach and referee have been handed hefty bans by Basketball Australia after they were found to have “misused” training footage of the Sydney Flames | sarah_keoghan
Sydney Uni Flames owner Paul Smith has slammed WNBL’s handling of an incident where a rival WNBL coach and referee who were found to have “misused” confidential video clips of the Sydney team filmed by Basketball Australia.
Cosier was banned from refereeing until the end of the season, which runs until April 2, while Goriss will be banned from all coaching activities, including Opals duties, until January 20. “We are bitterly disappointed by the actual incident but also the findings handed down by Basketball Australia’s independent hearing panel,” Smith said.“While we will not comment on the individual suspensions handed down, we strongly disagree with the finding ‘no actual advantage’ was gained by the UC Capitals as a result of the actions of the coach and official.”
The bans of both the head coach and official are effective immediately, but both parties have been given 14 days to appeal the sanctions.“This incident was immediately referred to the integrity unit who undertook a full investigation and referred the matter to an independent hearing panel,” he said. “We will not tolerate this behaviour in basketball. It is unprofessional and extremely disappointing at any level of the game.
