A woman is fighting for her life in hospital following a nose-to-tail car crash on a major motorway on the Gold Coast.

Emergency services were called to the Smith Street onramp to the Pacific Motorway at Molendinar after reports of a two-vehicle smash on Wednesday about 7:25pm.

Picture: iStock The driver of the car, a 34-year-old man also from Nerang, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for assessment.

Police believe the sedan had been heading southbound, following a white ute at the Smith Street onramp when traffic started to slow to merge.Witnesses reported the ute had L plates on the back. An unrestrained part of an engine in the sedan's back seat is understood to have been thrown forward and hit the woman in the head, Sunrise reported.
