The dog had been left ill for a number of weeks
A Northamptonshire woman has been jailed after she let her dog die in severe pain by failing to seek veterinary care after he drank antifreeze. Ten-month-old German Shepherd Rek suffered a "painful death" as a result of Laura Baverstock's lack of care, a court heard.
After Rek fell ill, the court was told, the defendant had asked for help from others to dig a hole in a communal garden to bury him, saying the dog was not dead but was dying. The people she asked refused to assist as they had seen Rek previously and he had seemed fine. However, she later showed him to them and he was "very ill, weak and lethargic" and the RSPCA was called. An inspector went to the location and attempted to contact the defendant.
The defendant said she had spoken to a vet who had told them the dog would be sick and then be fine. The hole that had been seen the night before by the other inspector had been filled. However, the most significant cause of death had been renal failure from ingesting antifreeze. The post-mortem concluded that Rek had been ill prior to being poisoned by antifreeze and that proper veterinary care had not been sought.
