A woman who disguised herself as someone living with a disability and used a solution which had 'a smell of chilli about it' and a homemade taser to steal jewellery was trying clear debts owed to a drug syndicate, a court has heard.

Tu Cam Thi Tran was sentenced in the District Court for donning a disguise and arming herself with a chilli solution and a homemade taser to steal from a jewellery store.Tu Cam Thi Tran has been jailed for more than five years after squirting a staff member in the eyes with a solution and stealing a tray of jewellery.

In sentencing, Judge Emily Telfer labelled Tran's offending over a six-month period from May 2023 until her arrest on November 7, 2023 as "brazen". "You suddenly sprayed her to the face with whatever was in that bottle, her eyes began to burn and she was stung by the substance."She said the store's owner ran after her.

"In October of 2022 you borrowed $25,000 from a drug syndicate to pay off a debt that was owed by your then partner from drug purchases," Judge Telfer said. "You were worried about the safety of your family and you understood members of the syndicate knew where your mother lived."Judge Telfer said the attempted robbery was "well-planned" and that Tran had "preyed" on the shopkeeper's goodwill by disguising herself as a person with a disability.

Judge Telfer said Tran also wore a "wide brimmed hat and sunglasses" while robbing that jewellery store, where she had replaced diamonds with cubic zirconia.
