NSW added 180,000 jobs last month as the economy rebounded after disruptions caused by the Delta outbreak.
The employment surge slashed the state’s unemployment rate to 4.6 per cent in November, down from 5.4 per cent a month before.Women led the NSW recovery, adding 106,000 jobs in the month, while men’s employment rose by 74,000. Total employment in the state climbed above the 4 million threshold in November for the first time since June, but remains around 50,000 jobs short of the pre-Delta outbreak peak reached in May.
Nationally, employment rose by a record 366,000 last month as NSW, Victoria and the ACT emerged from 2021 lockdowns. The national unemployment rate also fell sharply to 4.6 per cent.“Today’s labour force release had everything you want – a massive increase in employment, participation and hours worked, alongside a fall in the unemployment rate,” she said.“Strong levels for job postings and hiring intentions point to a continuing tightening in the labour market,” he said.
Dr Oliver said rising business and consumer confidence and household support payments during this year’s lockdowns had bolstered employment growth.
