If the Albanese government wants to encourage more women back into the workplace, it is critical that better pay is a focus of the Jobs and Skills Summit.
If women are the answer to Australia’s great skills shortage, how do we motivate a female labour market to work more, but for less?Jobs and Skills SummitIf the gender pay gap continued for the next 23.4 years, women would be robbed of $321,113 each.report, which measures timeframes to gender equality, women will now have to wait 23.4 years for the pay gap with men to close – that’s up from 22.7 years in the March quarter.
This capacity gap, while significant, reflects the highest level for women on record; for men it’s the highest since 2012. The policy changes are important – to provide improved support for women in working to their potential through initiatives such as higher wages in care sectors and accessible childcare. But what is really needed are behavioural changes to challenge gender stereotypes – at home, at school and in the workplace.
Between March 2012 and December 2020, the Financy Women’s Index headline score on women’s financial progress steadily increased. It hit its stride from December 2017, when the FWX recorded quarter-on-quarter sustained growth, helped by improved gender gaps in employment, wages, leadership, unpaid work and superannuation.
