Penny Wong says Australia intends to bid to co-host a future United Nations COP summit, vowing an Albanese government will not neglect Pacific nations on the existential threat of climate change.
“We will listen. We will hear you – your ideas for how we can face our shared challenges and achieve our shared aspirations together,” she said.
“Ignoring the calls of our Pacific family to act. Disrespecting Pacific nations in their struggle to adapt to what is an existential threat. The proposed deal will offer nations policing, security, cyber security, support on climate change and a new China-Pacific free-trade agreement but has caused concern to Australia and the United States.
