Bottles from container deposit schemes and household recycling will be converted into more sustainable wrapping for products at woolworths. | MsEmmaK

Household plastics and bottles from container deposit schemes will be recycled into more sustainable food packaging under a deal between Woolworths and ASX-listed Pact Group to reduce the number of new plastics used by the supermarket group.

Rob McCartney, who oversees the retailer’s sustainability arm Woolworths 360, said the supermarket giant was trying to remove as much plastic from its packaging as possible but that plastic was needed in some products. The exact value of the deal has not been revealed but both companies said it represented a “multimillion-dollar investment in local recycling and manufacturing capacity”.

Woolworths’ sustainability goals include halving the use of new plastics in packaging by 2024 and making sure its internal brand packaging has at least 60 per cent recycled content by 2025.
