Workers like Christine will benefit from new laws to be introduced next year allowing NSW employees in the community sector to accrue long service leave no matter how often they change jobs.
abc.net.au/news/portable-long-service-leave-law-change-for-workers/102772692Domestic violence worker Christine Smith has worked in the profession for 21 years, at six different organisations. The scheme would allow short term contract employees to accrue leave even when they change jobsThe government will consider extending the scheme to sick leave
In many other industries, she could have chosen to stay at the same company and become eligible for long service leave a decade ago."One of the really big things that I missed out on was the chance to provide end of life care for my parents personally on a day-to-day basis," she said.
The portable entitlements scheme will mean community sector workers on short term contracts, such as neighbourhood centre staff or disability services workers, can continue to accrue long service leave, no matter how often they change jobs. Industrial Relations Minister Sophie Cotsis said consultation would begin with unions and employer groups to design the scheme."For many disability sector workers, they're working for two or three non-government organisations and so they're not able to accrue any long service leave entitlements.""Our plan will bring NSW in line with other jurisdictions that have already established portable leave schemes for these sectors," Ms Cotsis said.
The announcement fulfils an election commitment, and brings community sector workers in line with the contract cleaning and construction industries, which already have a portable long service leave scheme.
