Knowingly or unknowingly, the premier has given the green light to a permanent two-class state made up of those whose jobs can be done by Zoom and those whose can’t | OPINION from Melbourne City councillor Roshena Campbell
We are not all in this together. Last week, the premier said working from home was “here to stay” for Victorian public servants. Knowingly or unknowingly, he has given the green light to a permanent two-class state made up of those whose jobs can be done by Zoom and those whose can’t., arguing, among other things, this will keep their members safe from new COVID variants.
With the exception of those professions where workers bill for their time, productivity can be difficult to measure. But just because they feel it, doesn’t make it so. It’s just that it’s unclear how good people are at assessing how many breaks and interruptions there really are when working at home.
There’s another reason however why we should be worried about making this a permanent feature of middle-class life. And that’s because it is an arrangement that is not available to the vast majority of workers and never will be.
