NSW Liberal Senator Jim Molan says the biggest problem with purchasing American Virginia-class submarines is the Americans are are 'so far behind' in their building program for nuclear submarines.

NSW Liberal Senator Jim Molan says the biggest problem with purchasing American Virginia-class submarines is the Americans are are “so far behind” in their building program for nuclear submarines.

This comes after questions have been raised on Monday about which nuclear subs Australia should purchase from its AUKUS partners. “So it’s going to be very, very, hard to do what others have said and that is to get an off-the-shelf submarine,” Mr Molan told Sky News host Chris Smith. “It’s going to be almost impossible … to do that, because in the American case they just don’t exist. In the British case, they won’t exist until about 2024 when the current British building program finishes.”
