Both Tommy Kahnle and Clay Holmes gave up more runs in high-leverage spots in Thursday's 6-5 loss to the Nationals at Yankee Stadium.
The right-hander gave up back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh inning on Thursday, blowing a late lead as the Yankees tried to win their second game in a row since Aug. 3.
With that sharp run-scoring hit up the middle from Washington’s left fielder Jake Alu, Kahnle has now allowed eight of his nine inherited runners to score this season, as noted by. That’s a major red flag for a pitcher that’s often called upon with the game on the line, tasked with stranding key runners on base.
The same can be said about Holmes, who gave up a run in the ninth. It was his third messy outing out of his last four and it would’ve been worse had Aaron Judge not thrown Alu out trying to stretch a single into a double. Holmes’ ERA is now sitting at 3.00 on the season as well. He also has one more year of team control in 2024.
If they can’t shake high-leverage woes or if this situation spirals more, they could enter next season in a different role.
