The family of a paramedic randomly stabbed to death have told a court of their grief after his killer was found not guilty on mental health grounds.

Jordan James Fineanganofo admitted to stabbing 29-year-old Steven Tougher 55 times outside a McDonald's at Campbelltown in south-west Sydney in the early hours of April 14, 2023.

Ms Tougher said she was haunted by the horror of her son's terrifying final moments, during which he begged Fineanganofo to stop the attack, which lasted almost four minutes. At the time of the attack, Tougher's wife Madison was pregnant with the couple's second child, who was born just weeks after his death."Our beautiful daughter will never get to meet her Dad."

"That is the way that the court and we as a society have to deal with a tragedy such that has occurred here when mentally ill people commit these crimes," he said.
