“We suspect what’s happening is chronic infections and inflammation in the mouth releases certain agents that make us more susceptible to other conditions,” says ADA Vice President Dr Scott Davis. “The bacteria produces toxins, which can then cause inflammation, which we know is really harmful for the body,” says Dr Fleur Creeper, a specialist periodontist and member of the ADA Oral Health Committee. “So, there can be inflammation in the oral tissues, but also at other sites in the body,”
