A young girl battling a terminal illness has helped police track down and arrest a 'cunning thief'. 9News

Four-year-old Zoe wants to be a police officer, and she got to show her chops for the job last week.

Constable Charlie, and his fellow police officers, wanted to give Zoe a birthday present, but a hooded man - referred to in the police force's official release as a "sly bandit" - managed to snatch the gift from their grasp. The chase saw Zoe take part in a road pursuit and a boat chase, before finally calling on Pol Air to spot the thief from the skies.Landing on the hill at North Fort, Zoe rallied the help of specialist officers from the Tactical Operations Unit and arrested the hooded thief hiding in a nearby carpark.The young girl's mother, Huyen, said Zoe had been very proud of herself, and thanked police for making her "dream come true".

Zoe is fighting diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer that affects about 20 children in Australia ever year.There are no effective treatments, with children expected to live only nine to 12 months on average after diagnosis. Zoe celebrates her fourth birthday today.
