To stem the loss of blood, and ultimately save the young surfer’s life, the off-duty cop used his dog’s leash as a makeshift tourniquet. A fundraiser for Kai has since raised more than $50,000 to support the 23-year-old surfer and his family as he embarks on a “long road to recovery”.
