Zoot Suit Riots of 1943 inspired El Paso artist's garment sculptures, collages in new CAMH exhibit
The notion of how clothing can mark a body informed"Rock of Eye," which made its debut at the Californian African-American Museum in collaboration with the Rivers Institute for Contemporary Art & Thought, before arriving at CAMH on Sept. 23. His fascination with fashion considers how society perceives certain groups by what they wear. Collages bind the elements together. An entirely new piece is a focal point in CAMH's iteration of"Rock of Eye.""Was the Beautiful Woman in the Mirror of the Water You or Me" spans an entire wall and inserts zoot suit-wearing women of color into the conversation.
