New documentary One Mind, One Heart tells the incredible true story behind the Yirrkala bark petitions and follows their repatriation journey back home.
"They came together as one people, Yolngu people, with one mind, one heart, one voice." That is how Yananymul Mununggurr describes the creation of the Yirrkala bark petitions.
"The land in question has been hunting and food-gathering land for the Yirrkala tribes from time immemorial: we were all born here," they wrote.
"When I put my hand up for this project with Professor Clare Wright, I said to her, 'We have to do this for Dad because he is the only one left and we have to bring it back home before he passes on'.""For me, you always have to ask yourself: 'Why is this my story to tell?'" Behrendt says.
From the land rights movement to the Barunga statement and unfulfilled promises of a treaty, to the fallout and devastating impact of the Howard government's NT Intervention, to the failed Voice Referendum in 2023, One Mind, One Heart serves as a reminder that, while governments and politicians come and go, the advocacy, activism and determination of Aboriginal people will not falter.
