Formula 1: F1 analyst Anthony Davidson has explained why he believes the five second penalty handed down to Lando Norris, following his overtake of Max Verstappen was fair.

The Briton’s optimistic title bid had been growing in confidence when he arrived in the United States at the weekend. With two wins from the last four races and leader Max Verstappen not having mounted the top step since June, he had reason to feel punchy about his chances. On McLaren’s first lukewarm weekend in months, Norris lost five points to Verstappen, having tasted defeat in both the sprint and the grand prix .

Sometimes how deep into the season a driver launches their comeback is more significant than the margin, as does prevailing form.Given the variety of points systems used in F1 over the years, the data below is presented in three different ways.adjusts the points based on today’s system. For example, if race win was worth 10 points in a given season, the margin would be multiplied by 2.5 to reflect the 25 points available for a race victory today.

The Briton qualified on pole alongside the Finn, but gearbox issues knocked him out of podium contention. Räikkönen won ahead of Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa with Alonso in third, completing perhaps the most significant points comeback in F1 history.: 17 points with three rounds remaining Of course James Hunt’s famous sole championship, subject of the Hollywood dramaThe biggest is Lauda’s horrific fireball crash at the German Grand Prix that almost claimed his life.

Alain Prost’s second title seemed inevitable with four rounds to go, when he closed to within two points of title leader Nigel Mansell after winning the Austrian Grand Prix at a canter on an afternoon his chief championship rivals all retired. Piquet, who’d won only the first race of the season before a run of inconsistent results put him on the cusp of falling out of contention, responded with two thundering wins, in Monza and Brands Hatch, to haul himself to the title decide in South Africa.

Sebastian Vettel’s title hopes were supposed to have ended in a puff of engine smoke at the Korean Grand Prix that put him 25 points behind leader Fernando Alonso and 15 points behind teammate Mark Webber with two rounds to run.

Fans of the Briton might take heart from the fact some of the sport’s most famous championship victories have come in more unlikely scenarios than the one he faces with five rounds to go this season. Consider that Hunt won his 1976 title despite suffering five retirements and a disqualification. Lauda finished a close second having retired twice and having missed two rounds. This year Verstappen has had one technical retirement from a grand prix. Norris has had none.

Norris’s run-up is too long and his margin too large for him to rely on similar freak outcomes. Even if Verstappen were to have two shockers in a row, he’d still have three races to recover as the season’s form driver. Graham Hill emerged as an interim leader in the middle of the campaign and held the lead ahead of the final race in Mexico, but an 11th-place finish to Surtees’s second saw the title go the way of the four-time 500cc motorcycle champion.: 16 points with five rounds remaining Keke Rosberg’s famous one-win 1982 title comes with the obvious caveat that comfortable leader Didier Pironi suffered a career-ending injury with five rounds to go, counting him out of the fight.
