Do you know your way around a power drill? These women never had a chance to learn, but they're making up for lost time and it's helping them stay independent.
Tracey Francisco bought a power drill about six months ago, but it sits idle, still in its original packaging.
Ms Francisco's trainer for the day was registered nurse Jacquei Quach who describes herself as a "tinkerer" who was "lucky enough" to have grown up on a farm. She says it's important to have a safe space where women can develop their experience "without being made to feel stupid" or that it was an unnecessary skill.Ms Quach says while some women might not know where to go to learn, others might not want to learn because they prefer more traditional gender roles."We often see it with women paying bills … if the male partner does all that then all of a sudden the woman is very, very lost.
Ms Brown says it is even more important for women living alone in country Australia to be self-sufficient. Dr Ogrin's research surveyed women aged 55 or older living alone about what they needed to live independently.
