F1: Lando Norris has secured pole position while Piastri finished second in the final qualifying session of 2024.
McLaren in box seat after securing top 2 | 01:46The longest season in Formula 1 history is in the books, and for just the 12th time ever the drivers and constructors championship s have been split.cLaren prevailed in the fight for the teams title It’s also the first time in 41 years the drivers champion’s team has finished third or lower in the constructors championship and the third time ever.New to Kayo? It did it some style, with Norris romping to a controlled victory to keep the arithmetic on side even as Ferrari threatened to blow the battle open with an unexpectedly competitive Sunday.“Lando drove brilliantly. The team was flawless. They executed. The pit stop was great. I think I was the only one that was about ready to have a heart attack for two hours.
“To end the season like this is perfect, so just a congrats and big thank you to everyone in McLaren, everyone in papaya, everyone who supported us this year, because it’s been a tough one. For us to win a constructors after 26 years is pretty special.”It’s not only that the team’s previous title was so long ago; it’s that the team was so uncompetitive as recently as 18 months ago, having been in the competitive wilderness for the better part of the last decade.
Having been in contention for the drivers championship until the antepenultimate round of the season and leading the team to the constructors title, Norris said winning the title double was the obvious goal in 2025, the final season of the current regulations. Suddenly a double podium finish was on for Ferrari, and with Piastri unlikely to score more than a point or two — he eventually finished 10th with a single point — the title permutations were far more open.
It left Ferrari hoping for an error or bad luck to befall the leader, but Norris was unbreakable. Ferrari hearts broke instead. The embattled Mexican was faultless in the incident, with Valtteri Bottas penalised for causing the crash, but it was just the latest scoreless result in a year of woe. “At the moment it’s all I know. I’ve got a contract to drive next year. It will be down to reaching an agreement hopefully. We’ll see what the team wants to do.”
Evidently Pérez has passed up the opportunity to bow out of the sport this weekend. It means his sacking will now come via press release, likely some time this week — an ignominious end to an ignominious season but a sad conclusion to a career that in its totality should’ve warranted more.“We dreamt alone, but together we believed,” Hamilton radioed after crossing the chequered flag for the final time in a Mercedes. “Thank you for all the courage, the determination and the passion.
And with the works team specifically, having switched from the newly independent McLaren in 2013, team and driver have formed the most successful partnership ever forged, sharing 84 victories and six drivers titles along with eight constructors championships.
