Moto GP: Jorge Martin has extended his Championship lead after a win in Indonesia, but the race wasn't without drama.
After a crash for Enea Bastianini and an engine failure for Marc Marquez last Sunday in Indonesia , this year’s MotoGP title fight has boiled down to a head-to-head rematch between Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, last year’s combatants set for another bout to determine who wins the championship belt .
How many points has each championship protagonist binned in 2024? Will the title go to the most rapid rider, or the one who rides smarter as well as faster? And will Martin being the hunted – rather than the hunter, as he was last year – impact how the final five rounds in a mentally-taxing six-week span across three continents will play out?
Since he reclaimed the lead from Bagnaia after Aragon, he’s dropped just two points in three rounds. To use a tennis term, the championship feels like it’s on his racquet. In contrast to Martin – and perhaps to reprise his earlier premier-class career – Bagnaia has been more vulnerable than ever this season, and a time where he’s never been faster.
He crashed in a fight for third with Marc Marquez at Portugal in round two, inexplicably dropped it from a commanding lead on the final lap of the sprint race at the Catalan GP, fell from a podium place in the sprint race at the British Grand Prix, had a controversial coming-together with Alex Marquez as they fought for third in Aragon and then crashed from third place at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix as he was rapidly catching Martin and Bastianini out front.
Bagnaia – cerebral, considered, analytical, technical – feels the extra speed that’s able to be coaxed out of Michelin’s new-for-2024 rear tyre this season explains why pole position times and lap records are being smashed right across the calendar, but has a bike even as potent as the GP24 on a knife-edge.
