About 10 per cent of Australia's rock fishing deaths in the past 20 years have occurred in the Randwick City Council area. Data shows many of the fatalities are men born in Asia, but it's hoped a new ad campaign can help keep fishers safe.
Of the 201 people who died rock fishing in the past 20 years, 10 per cent of them were in the Randwick area.Ads targeting men from non-English-speaking backgrounds will be shown outdoors, in foreign language newspapers, online and in cinemas.
Many of the 22 deaths occurred at popular rock fishing spots in the region such as Little Bay, Malabar and Cape Banks. "Rock fishing is not like other types of fishing. It's dangerous and should not be attempted by those who cannot swim, don't have the proper safety equipment, training or knowledge."Rock fishing locations in the area already feature signage designed to shock anglers. The signs show the number of people who have died at the location while rock fishing.A report from Surf Life Saving NSW found most rock fishing fatalities were males born in Asia.
