NRLW: New Zealand Rugby Sevens star Stacey Waaka has made a promising start in her first Rugby League endeavour, notching up back to back wins with the Broncos since signing on with the NRLW.
‘That’s a yellow in union!’: Cross-code Broncos star Stacey Waaka opens up on wild ride from Paris gold to the NRLWJust weeks after claiming an Olympic gold medal at the Stade de France , Stacey Waaka was running out in a Brisbane Broncos jersey ready to start a new chapter in Rugby League.
“There was no time to switch off. While I did celebrate the Gold medal with the girls, I enjoyed taking that Olympic fitness straight here to NRLW, straight into my first training.” Waaka told foxsports.com.au reflecting on the whirlwind turnaround. Waaka was a keen netballer and touch footballer before the opportunities in rugby arose in New Zealand when she was 16 years old.
Waaka admitted the nuances between the two codes, especially in collisions has taken some adjustment. Coached by NRL great Scott Prince, Waaka has enjoyed back to back wins with the Broncos, who are in the midst of some strong form after a tough start to the NRLW season. “Ali Brigginshaw has been my biggest mentor, being our captain. But there is so much experience and talent in this team that are teaching me so much already.Waaka isn’t the only Rugby player from the across the ditch making their mark in NRLW, with New Zealand Sevens teammate Tyla King signed up by the Dragons for the rest of the season.
