Premier Jacinta Allan says she asked Mr Cheeseman to resign on Monday after further allegations of misconduct were brought to her attention.

MP Darren Cheeseman has resigned from the Parliamentary Labor Party following further allegations of misconduct. Premier Jacinta Allan says she asked Mr Cheeseman to resign on Monday night after new allegations were brought to her office.

Mr Cheeseman says he will continue to serve as Member for South Barwon despite his expulsion. Member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman has resigned from the Parliamentary Labor Party following further allegations of inappropriate behaviour. The development comes after Mr Cheeseman was initially asked by Premier Jacinta Allan to resign from his role as Parliamentary Secretary for Education on Friday, before being removed from the caucus entirely on Monday. In a statement released by the premier's office on Monday evening, Jacinta Allan said the safety and wellbeing of staff was "not negotiable". "This afternoon I received new information about further allegations of persistent, inappropriate behaviour by the Member for South Barwon towards another member of staff," the statement said. "After enquiries by my office, and in consultation with my colleagues, tonight I asked the Member for South Barwon to resign as a member of the Parliamentary Labor Party — and he has done so. "Following these new allegations it is now clear to me that there is no place for the Member for South Barwon in my government."In a statement on Facebook, Mr Cheeseman said although he had resigned from the Parliamentary Labor Party, he would not be stepping down from parliament altogether."This is an incredibly distressing time for me and my family and I ask our privacy to please be respected." When asked about Mr Cheeseman's position in the party on Sunday, Ms Allan said she was initially briefed last Wednesday on the allegations. "I determined that the information that was before me did not meet the standards that not only I expect personally, but the standards that I uphold with the responsibility to enforce the ministerial code of conduct," she said. Mr Cheeseman has served as the Member for South Barwon since 2018, and previously held the federal seat of Corangamite from 2007 to 2013.How BHP used its $60 billion bid for Anglo American to hit back at climate change deniersUS website defends hosting Australian 'whites-only' community fundraiser on websiteOne in seven people admit to using tech to sexually harass colleagues at work, new data showsJudy worries when her husband checks the farm at night with a rise in rural crime changing the way they liveThe government ordered an investigation into of last year's Optus outage.
