Another pilot whale has washed up deceased on a beach near Thursday’s mass stranding and another is being monitored close to shore after more than 200 whales were rescued from becoming stranded near Dunsborough in WA’s southwest.
Authorities are none the wiser as to why more than 200 whales would beach themselves off Western Australia ’s coast.
Community members comforted a pod of pilot whales and kept their heads above water in an effort to save the animals that had beached themselves at Toby’s Inlet, near Dunsborough. A shark warning was issued and local government authorities closed the beach while the deceased whale was removed. “Boats and a spotter aircraft continue to monitor and assess any sighting reports and staff are available to respond as required.” On Thursday, DBCA senior research scientist of marine fauna Holly Raudino said there were a variety of reasons why whales might beach themselves and it could be that one member of the pod was ill and the others followed it.
