AFL: Former Eagles coach Adam Simpson has given fans an insight into why the Hawks defence is operating so well, following their hot start to the season.
On Wednesday night, premiership coaches Adam Simpson and John Longmire teamed up to educate fans about modern-day ‘ team defence ’ in the AFL – and why it’s more complicated and nuanced than you’d think.
FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play.“There’s some sides who just like the one-on-one, back-shoulder, press the game – and then there’s sides that like to congest the game with a bit of controlling space and free up a spare down the line.” Simpson then presented a passage of play with behind-the-goals vision from Hawthorn’s win over Carlton last week. It showed how well Sam Mitchell’s side was set up behind the ball, with Tom Barrass initially acting as ‘the anchor’ – the loose man in defence – and his teammates pushing up the field to keep any free Blues players accountable. As Carlton pushed the ball forward – and won a free kick – Josh Weddle became the Hawks’ anchor. Good Hawthorn pressure up the field led to a Carlton dump kick inside 50 and a turnover, with a match-up domino effect allowing the Hawks to “turn defence to offence”, according to Simpson.co-host Gerard Whateley said after watching the vision: “Simmo, that’s awesome.”Longmire said it was a passage of play Mitchell could’ve shown his playing group during the week to highlight the team’s chemistry.“They have brought in two experienced defenders . So if you look at that back six now and you watch that slowly, they’re all connected to each other, their heads are swivelling and looking where the role is they have to play, including the winger. “The most important thing, that bit of vision, that’s all we look for as coaches … watching that bit of gold. If you’re able to get that bit of gold and show your players and show how connected they are, that gives you so much.”
