Under new laws, Tasmanian landlords will have little say on whether a pet can be brought to live on their property. While some have praised the change, the state's real estate body says more protections should be put in place to safeguard investors.
The Real Estate Institute of Tasmania has launched a campaign against the state government's proposed legislation allowing pets in rentals.
"This isn't a rich landlord, this is someone who is renting out a place to survive," Terry said, who didn't want to use his last name."And now it's all at risk." But the first draft of the bill doesn't make it a requirement for tenants to provide a pet bond, have carpets professionally cleaned at the end of the tenancy, or keep the pet outside where appropriate.
"I think we are at the crisis stage where owners are feeling their rights are being taken away," she said.
