AFL: Geelong is keen to host home finals in the future at the rebuilt GMHBA Stadium, but On the Couch's Jon Ralph explains how hard it'll be to happen.
Geelong ’s quest to host an elusive home final , should the opportunity arise this season, is alive and possible thanks to a relatively unknown clause in the AFL’s finals fixturing that falls in their favour., the league holds the keys to give the Cats just their second ever home final – but only if their predicted crowd for the match is of 55,000 people or less.

New to Kayo?“Any week one or two final that has a projected crowd of over 55,000 must be played at the MCG – anything under that, well it’s open slather – Marvel Stadium, maybe GMHBA, we know they’ve got a new capacity of 40,000,” Ralph explained on Monday night.
On The Couch panellist and Brisbane Lions champion Jonathan Brown disagreed with the theory however, noting that there are plenty of imbalances in the league that shouldn’t be fixed.“We played at a ground as wide of this coffee table on the weekend,” he added jokingly, in reference to Norwood Oval.Geelong hosted their only ever finals match in 2013, a qualifying final against Fremantle where the Dockers left the town victorious by 15 points.
Since the 2013 final, only two matches have tipped crowds over the 32,000 mark – almost exclusively due to ongoing constructions at the venue.
