An array of colourful flora has transformed Western Australia's countryside despite fears this year's wildflower season would be a bust.
Wildflowers have bloomed in abundance in WA's Midwest region despite an extended dry season at the start of the year.Mullewa visitor centre manager Natalie Hillier says there are still a couple of weeks left for people to come and enjoy the wildflowers before the seed.An array of colourful flora has transformed Western Australia's countryside despite fears this year's wildflower season would be a bust.
But Mullewa artist and business owner Helen Ansell said perfectly timed stormy skies at the beginning of July created ideal conditions for the "best season yet".ABC Midwest & Wheatbelt: Chris Lewis"Farmers were thinking they weren't going to get any crops at all, I was thinking we wouldn't get any wildflowers," she said.
"Whereas because the rain came quite late we now have all the different colours at once and we're also noticing flowers growing in places that we've never seen before."ABC Midwest & Wheatbelt: Chris Lewis" I was driving around in my little car and just trying to find some flowers and found one patch," she said.
Ms Teale and other volunteers based in Geraldton form the Chapman River Friends, a designated group that goes on weekly walks beside the river and identifies flora during spring.ABC Midwest & Wheatbelt: Chris Lewis"In the last two years we've been able to double the amount of orchids we've seen," Ms Teale said.
