300 residents in the remote Northern Territory community of Yarralin have been receiving less than half the food they need for six weeks. The community is appealing to either the NT government or Commonwealth to find a solution until local roads are passable.
But the manager of the Walangeri Ngumpinku Aboriginal Corporation, which owns the community's food store, Martin Schahinger, says the NT government flights have now stopped. "People have been catching barramundi if they have fuel to get out bush, but now we've run out of fish hooks to sell them. Mr Schahinger said the store had stocked up two months' worth of food before the wild weather set in.
"When the food does come in it's not much, it's only half of what we need, and when there's no food, there's no food," she said."It's caused a panic in the community, there is a lot of pressure for families with no food in their house.
