Two judges have dismissed Joel Russo 's sentence appeal for the violent rape of a jogger on Merri Creek Trail in Melbourne 's inner-north. Russo, 29, dragged the woman into the creek and subjected her to violent sexual assault for over two-and-a-half hours in December 2019. He was sentenced to a maximum of 20 years and four months in prison with a minimum term of 17 years in June 2023.
The judges upheld the original sentence, stating that cases of violent sexual offending as grave as Russo's are few and far between
