Cottesloe was one of only two Liberal seats to hold firm in the red Labor tsunami of 2021, but with the sitting MP on his way out, and a teal-tinged candidate entering the fray, the tide could be changing in the beachside enclave.

As far as safe Liberal seats go, it doesn't get much bluer than the beachside electorate of Cottesloe.

But he lost pre-selection at the start of this year, making way for the new Liberal candidate Sandra Brewer. In years gone by, an independent challenger in Cottesloe would have been quickly dismissed as irrelevant. And while Chaney's campaign focused heavily on climate action, Dr Horncastle will lean into concerns around "sustainable development, health and protecting the local environment".Dr Horncastle's chances are very slim, according to political analyst Martin Drum."I do think Cottesloe is the sort of electorate that would be fertile ground for a teal-style independent," he said.
