Security cameras at Ashley Youth Detention Centre were offline when a detainee threatened a staff member with a knife during a cooking workshop, documents reveal.

A staff member at Ashley Youth Detention Centre was threatened with a knife on October 10 last year, according to documents published through Right to Information laws.

The facility's security cameras were in the midst of an outage at the time of the "critical incident". Security cameras at Tasmania's only youth detention centre were offline when a staff member was threatened with a knife, documents reveal.

The "critical incident" on October 10 last year at Ashley Youth Detention Centre , near Deloraine in the state's north, came five days afterThree youths charged with arson following fire at detention centre Documents published by the Department for Education, Children and Young People under Tasmania's Right to Information laws have revealed another incident within the same week in which a staff member was threatened in the Ashley School Kitchen during a cooking workshop delivered by an external provider.

"The situation escalated after a staff member was threatened with a knife and the kitchen was damaged," said a question time brief for the Minister for Children and Youth Jo Palmer. "All other young people at AYDC were secured and accounted for, and AYDC entered full lockdown.

" However, according to the documents, the detention centre's CCTV network experienced a "fault that impacted recordings" from 1:20pm to 5:30pm on Friday, October 10. "Most of the cameras affected were in the Administration building and Ashley School," the ministerial briefing says, explaining that those cameras are on a different server to other cameras at the facility. "The issue was identified when Tasmania Police requested to review relevant CCTV footage of the afternoon's incident in the school.

" The briefing note said that "CCTV systems contractor Honeywell was called at 4.16pm and identified an issue with the server switches that enable the recording of CCTV footage". It said that IT staff "will continue to investigate and confirm the cause".

Then, on February 5, two youth workers were injured in an incident that happened one day after employees walked off the job over concerns about staff shortages. The detention centre has been flagged for closure in 2028, pending the construction of a new facility in Tasmania's south.
