The Electoral Commission of Queensland has issued about tens of thousands of people with 'apparent failure to vote notices' in the wake of the March local government elections.
About 35,000 " apparent failure to vote notice s" have been issued by the Electoral Commission of Queensland following the March council elections. The ECQ is urging Queenslanders to prepare for the state election in October to ensure they can cast their vote.More than $5 million in fines could be issued to tens of thousands of Queenslanders who did not cast a vote in the state's local government elections.
The electoral authority said the notices were sent to people who had a history of repeatedly failing to vote in Queensland elections.Non-voters who fail to give an appropriate reason or who do not reply to the notice could then be hit with a $154 fine. An ECQ spokesperson warned the fines could be referred to the State Penalties Enforcement Registry for further action if left unpaid. They also urged voters to plan ahead for the upcoming state election on October 26 to ensure they could cast their ballot.
The report revealed that the ECQ significantly miscalculated the number of people who would opt to vote on election day rather than do it early.
