Sydney surgeon Dr Mahyar Amjadi has been found guilty of professional misconduct.A Sydney plastic surgeon who patients say left them with "disfigurement" has been found guilty of professional misconduct.

A hearing next month will determine whether Dr Amjadi’s misconduct was serious enough for his registration to be suspended or cancelled.Share article A Sydney plastic surgeon has been found guilty of unsatisfactory professional conduct and professional misconduct after a marathon case involving 14 patients and more than 6,500 pages of evidence from the Health Care Complaints Commission . Dr Mahyar Amjadi opened Luxe Clinic in Sydney's eastern suburbs in 2016, and performed complex cosmetic plastic surgery and body contouring procedures in private hospitals across Sydney and Wollongong. The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal heard one patient suffered "life-threatening" complications after a liposuction cannula used by Dr Amjadi struck and damaged the patient's pancreas, liver and spleen during a tummy tuck surgery.Photo shows Two surgeons wearing protective clothing undertake an operation. Rowah Kaddour still has nightmares about the putrid smell of rotting skin emanating from her abdomen after undergoing cosmetic surgery that went horribly wrong. The tribunal found Dr Amjadi inappropriately performed breast surgery on another patient who was four months' postpartum, contrary to clinically-accepted practice, and inappropriately removed excessive skin from another patient's right arm during surgery. A fourth patient had wound complications after Dr Amjadi inserted deltoid muscle implants, a procedure he had never performed before. Overall, the tribunal found Dr Amjadi guilty of unsatisfactory professional conduct involving six patients who had a range of cosmetic surgeries between February 2017 and December 2019. Eleven allegations against the surgeon were upheld including failure to obtain informed consent before surgery, inadequate medical records and failure to conduct physical examinations of patients prior to admission for surgery.'The best news I have heard' Last year, the ABC revealed one of Dr Amjadi's patients, Rowah Kaddour, who is not one of the 14 patients who formed part of the HCCC case, sued him in the Supreme Court of NSW, alleging "gross disfigurement", psychological trauma and distress over the state of her body, life-threatening infection and sepsis and a breach of duty of care. She said the psychological toll contributed to the break up with her partner."Hearing that he has been found guilty is the best news I have heard," she told the ABC. She said she was aware of many women suffering psychological issues after botched cosmetic surgical procedures conducted by medical practitioners.Ms Kaddour underwent liposuction and a tummy tuck in 2019, which left her abdomen deformed. She said she had been told she would need multiple surgeries, which could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, with no guarantee the problem would be fixed.SuppliedLast year, regulators tightened rules on doctors calling themselves cosmetic surgeons after a joint Sydney Morning Herald and Four Corners investigation found patients were being put at risk and needed better protections. In this case, Dr Amjadi is a fully qualified and registered plastic and reconstructive surgeon and a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons . Dr Amjadi's website states: "I always work hard to make sure my practice is up to the standard that my patients and their referring doctors expect" but contains no mention of the restrictions placed on his registration since 2022. Those restrictions include a ban on performing any body-contouring surgery and stipulate that he must practice under supervision when performing any cosmetic surgery procedures, amongst other restrictions. He told the tribunal his complication rate in both 2018 and 2019 was approximately 10 to 15 per cent and he did not consider that unacceptable. "I have a deep level of shame surrounding my failures, as it was never my intention to cause any harm or distress" he told the tribunal. There will be a further tribunal hearing next month to decide whether Dr Amjadi's registration to practice should be suspended or cancelled.
