Peter Dutton's plan to build a nuclear power plant in Collie has drawn mixed reactions in the west, but it won't happen before 2050.
WA Energy Minister Reece Whitby says an election promise by the Coalition to build a nuclear power plant near Collie made no economic or practical sense.
Mr Dutton today announced the retiring Muja power plants, south-east of the town would be the preferred site of a nuclear power plant under a future Coalition government. The Opposition Leader did not say how much it would cost, but claimed it would be a "fraction" of the Albanese government's renewable plan.Labor politicians in WA have lined up to trash the plan, with Collie-Preston MP Jodie Hanns claiming "nobody" in Collie wants nuclear in their town.
Jodie Hanns said her community was supportive of the economic transition plan started by the McGowan government. "You've got more chance of seeing a unicorn trotting down St Georges Terrace than you have of nuclear power being a feasible and reliable option for our energy system."WA Liberal senator Michaelia Cash said Collie's nuclear plant would likely not come to fruition until 2050.
