The 18-year-old drowned in Townsville's Ross River while fleeing police in 2022. A coronial inquest has heard it is unlikely that his death could have been prevented.
A coronial inquest has been held in Townsville to investigate the death of a young Indigenous man in 2022.Police have told a coronial inquest they did not believe the death of a young Indigenous man who drowned while escaping arrest in Townsville could have been prevented.
"He ran into difficulty swimming due to physical exhaustion from running and negotiating heavily weeded conditions in the river," Ms McKeon said. "It caused a significant delay … but the rules at the time had to be followed quite strictly," Senior Sergeant Dusha said. "The presence of thongs or shoes or any other personal items in that space, it's hard to determine exactly what that means."
Detective Sergeant Sean White said one officer did enter the water to search underneath a pier but that it was not safe to send police in given the muddy and dark conditions.
