From January, the federal government will wipe the university debt of doctors or nurse practitioners who are willing to work in regional and remote areas, subject to a few conditions.
Pathology Technology Australia CEO Dean Whiting says it is “very clear” regional doctors are missing some of the services which the metropolitan has, such as “access to fast turnaround to pathology tests”.
“Despite the fact that our pathology services are amongst the best in the world, it’s difficult for them to reach most of the rural and remote areas of Australia,” Mr Whiting told Sky News Australia. “And this is where point-of-care testing comes in, so this is pathology testing, but it’s in a format that is readily been able to be performed in a doctor surgery, in a pharmacy, and in rural and remote locations.
“So, we’re suggesting that this is another element that will help keep doctors in rural and remote areas.”
