The 46-year-old was sentenced to 17 years in jail with a non-parole period of 13 years, seven months and seven days. The sentence was backdated to July 4, 2023, meaning he will be eligible to apply for parole in February 2037.A former basketball umpire and school support officer who sexually abused seven teenage boys has been jailed for 17 years.
In sentencing, Judge Emily Telfer said Wieland offended over a five-year period, encountering his seven victims on social media platforms before meeting them in person at various locations including public toilets in shopping centres. "The fact of the matter is you didn't care if your search turned up children, you believed to be willing and were prepared to take advantage of children who were in their early stages of exploring their sexuality for your own gratification."I conclude that it must have been clear to you very soon after you began connecting with people on those applications that children under the age of consent were using the applications.
Judge Telfer said Wieland had also told one of his victims not to tell his parents about their relationship because he was worried her would be imprisoned.Offender 'didn't care' victims were children
