The Herald's View: Anthony Albanese has made a good start as prime minister of Australia and has the chance to turn it into two or more terms. To do so he will need to turn a competent start into a solid administration

, has put those doubts aside. The public has swung behind Labor with a surge of support to give the new federal government a strong lead, with a primary vote of 42 per cent, up from 33 per cent at the election just three months ago.

A significant factor in that shift to Labor appears to be the public’s support for Albanese. He now holds a commanding lead over Opposition Leader Peter Dutton as preferred prime minister, with 55 per cent backing him over 17 per cent for Dutton. And to drive home the dominance Labor now holds, it’s now seen as the stronger party when it comes to managing the economy and national security and defence, two areas in which the Coalition has traditionally been dominant.
