However, an Australian first invention — developed by the Lions Eye Institute — now seeks to significantly improve access to better eye care in isolated and remote communities.Lions Outback Vision has created an AI-powered mobile retinal scanner as part of the state government's The Challenge initiative. The competition aims to encourage groups worldwide to develop innovative solutions to healthcare issues in the Pilbara.
"We wanted to harness the artificial intelligence advances that are occurring that have enabled an on-the-spot diagnosis," he said.The AI-powered retinal scanner is part of a mobile vehicle and travels to remote communities.Professor Turner, who has worked in the Pilbara for more than a decade, said diabetes diagnoses were increasing, and the disease can lead to blindness.
The AI scanner will aim to target remote and isolated Indigenous communities to improve accessibility to eye checks. "This concept of seeing your heart disease from the eye has really spurred us on with the recent results to make eye checks a universal part of primary care."The competition
